Brioche Class with Guest Instructor Haven Leavitt

01/14/2011

Brioche: It’s everywhere this knitting season!
Vogue Knitting has a whole section on the brioche stitch in the Winter issue. Nancy Marchant has a new book devoted exclusively to her ideas about it. Brioche is traditionally knit flat although that is changing! It is a two color technique using both colors at the same time where you don’t exactly carry the non-working yarn behind. It creates a double thick squishy fabric that some say looks like double knitting.

We were first introduced it to it when former Stix Chix, Heather Brooks, knit Wendy Easton’s Brioche hat in Weekend Knitting. Believe it or not, not a single one of the current Stix Chix has knitted a project using the brioche stitch. We put our heads together and remembered that one of our beloved customers had knit a hat and matching cowl using this colorwork technique.

Haven Leavitt of Big Sky has knitted a few lovely samples for Stix. She learned to knit at age seven and has been knitting ever since! Haven has her own knitting blog (Ha!) which some of you may be familiar with. In fact, Ann of Mason-Dixon Knitting recently found Haven’s Man Hat pattern, knit one and the pattern went viral! We are very excited that Haven has agreed to teach us the Brioche Stitch!

Her Brioche cowl is knit in the round out of worsted weight yarn. This one session class will be held on Tuesday, January 25th at 7 pm down at Stix. Skills needed: knit, purl, yo, CO and BO, knitting in the round, the ability to read your work, comfort with using two yarns at the same time.

Materials: 200yds each of two significantly different colors of worsted weight yarn, 400yds total, one 16’ circular or set of double points in size 8 (use your best judgment if you normally go up or down a needle size)

Please call to register (556-5786) and stop down to pick up your yarn beforehand.
Remember: when you purchase your class materials from Stix, your class is free!
