Spiral Hat – Worsted Version
Materials: approximately 115 yards of worsted weight yarn, size 7 circular needles for knitting in the round, size G crochet hook (for optional edging at bottom of hat), and a tapestry needle.
Gauge: 5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch (adjust needle size if necessary)
Size: one size fits most adults
Measurements: finished hat circumference= ~20″
Abbreviations:
CO=Cast on, K=Knit, P=Purl, YO=Yarn over, K2tog=Knit two together, SC=Single Crochet, Sl St=Slip stitch
Instructions:
CO 96 stitches, place marker, join in round
Work in 1×1 ribbing (K1, P1, repeat) for 8 rows or until brim is desired length
Spiral Pattern: (multiple of 6 stitches)
Round 1: *K4, YO, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round
Round 2 : K all sts
Repeat these two rounds until hat measures approximately 7 inches from beginning
Decreasing:
Round 1: *K4, YO, K3tog, repeat from * to marker, remove marker, finish the final “K4, YO, K3tog,” then replace the marker after the last K3tog to indicate the new beginning of the round.
Round 2 and all even rounds: K all stitches
Round 3- *K3, YO, K3tog, repeat from * to marker, remove marker, finish the final “K3, YO, K3tog,” then replace the marker after the last K3tog to indicate the new beginning of the round.
Round 5- *K2, YO, K3tog, repeat from * to marker, remove marker, finish the final “K2, YO, K3tog,” then replace the marker after the last K3tog to indicate the new beginning of the round.
Round 7- K2tog around
Finishing:
Cut yarn and using tapestry needle, pull tail through remaining stitches. Weave in ends.
Crochet edging (optional):
Join yarn at cast on edge of hat, SC once in each stitch around, join in first SC with a Sl St, end off.
Spiral Hat – Aran Version
Materials: approximately 100 yards of aran weight yarn, size 9 circular needles for knitting in the round, size H crochet hook (for optional edging at bottom of hat), and a tapestry needle.
Gauge: 4.5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch (adjust needle size if necessary)
Size: one size fits most adults
Measurements: finished hat circumference= ~20”
Instructions:
CO 90 stitches, place marker, join in round
Work in 1×1 ribbing (K1, P1, repeat) for 8 rows or until brim is desired length
Spiral Pattern: (multiple of 6 stitches)
Round 1: *K4, YO, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round
Round 2 : K all sts
Repeat these two rounds until hat measures 6.5 inches from beginning

Follow instructions for Worsted Version
Finishing:
Cut yarn and using tapestry needle, pull tail through remaining stitches. Weave in ends

This is adorable. And it uses some of my favorite yarn.

Perfect! I have a skein of kureyon I have been saving for a hat. This will be perfect.
